Pozzuoli was an ancient seaside town probably best known for its bradyseism, a raising and lowering of the Earth’s surface due to underground volcanic activity. After the battle of Actium at the start of the Empire, the trireme became the main ship. During the Republic, the quinquereme was the standard ship. In the ocean-going fleets, the three main designs were trireme, quadrireme, and quinquereme.
